Joint replacement surgery

Arthroplasty

Currently, the most successful arthroplasty are knee and hip replacements.

Arthroplasty is surgery to replace artificial materials for osteoarthritis from overuse, accident or tumor to reduce pain in the knee or hip joint and correct the deformity. Allowing the patient to return to use the knee or hip joint for standing, walking, doing activities such as shopping, traveling, working conveniently and without pain.

Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure to reduce pain from osteoarthritis, which is usually painful when walking up and down the stairs and resolving knee deformities such as bow-legged or knock-kneed

Arthroplasty is the only change in the joint surface of the worn cartilage and substitute with artificial materials. Most of them are made from alloys. That is strong and safe to stay in the body for a long time.

The diagram shows the components of an artificial knee joint, consisting of the femur support, tibia support, and patellar receptacle.
When should knee osteoarthritis patients undergo joint replacement surgery?

When there is pain that interferes with daily activities, and pain that need painkillers every day or if previously treated with injections has not improved. Because taking painkillers may have side effects on the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and heart.  And the x-rays show that the cartilage is already worn out.

How do you know that What is the severity level of degeneration?

X-ray image can tell the severity level of the degeneration. Well, but if not taking an x-ray, the following symptoms are often seen in patients with severe osteoarthritis of the knee, including persistent knee pain for more than 2-3 years, not improved by medication or injection, or knee deformities.

Can you walk after surgery?

After surgery, patients can walk within 12-24 hours using a four-legged walking stick and use it for 4-6 weeks. After that, they can walk without using a walking aid.

How long does it take to recover?

Take 3-4 nights to stay in the hospital. After leaving the hospital, you can walk indoors using a walker as an aid for 2-4 weeks and can return to work normally for 6-8 weeks.

Is it a painful operation?

It depends on many factors such as operating time, deformity before the surgery and sometimes patient themselves. But we try our best to make you feel the most comfortable after the surgery with our surgical technique and multimodal analgesia. Most patients have pain levels measured using a VAS score of 2-3 after the surgery (0 means no pain at all and 10 is the highest pain score).

Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Total hip replacement is a surgery to replace the femoral head and the socket with artificial implants in hip osteoarthritis patients. Primary hip osteoarthritis and osteonecrosis of the femoral head are two most conditions that required total hip replacement when it failed the medication.

The illustration shows the steps in hip replacement surgery, comparing the hip before and after artificial joint placement, and showing the position of the hip socket and femoral head.
The diagram shows the components of an artificial hip joint, consisting of the acetabular cup, the plastic liner, and the artificial femoral head.
